Humans have become the dominant agency shaping the climates, ecosystems, landscapes, and waters
of planet Earth. This potency requires the creation of a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. It
provides a novel, useful, and reassuring vantage point for examining critical environmental issues such
as sustainability, resource use, human population, and mass extinction. Knowing how the earth works
and what its history has been puts all other academic disciplines into their proper perspective.
