  • 9/30 New Migrant Farmworker Advocacy club

Hello! Do you care about human rights issues, agriculture, our food system, immigration issues, sexual assault issues, and human health? If you are, we welcome you to join our advocacy and solidarity efforts! We are looking for people who want to learn more, contribute ideas, and make a change!

We are SFA, or Student Farmworker Alliance. We are a new club on campus supporting the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and their national advocacy for equal rights for farm workers as well as focusing on alleviating local farmworker issues. Each year, between 1 and 3 million migrant farm workers leave their homes to plant, cultivate, harvest, and pack fruits, vegetables and nuts in the U.S. With a history of being victims to human rights violations, this overlooked population risks their safety, health, and education working the fields and are consistently exposed to hazardous conditions

The paradox is, the very people who are feeding our country struggle to feed their own families.

We hope to be part of the movement that raises awareness about these issues and help farm workers that are organizing to demand working and living conditions. We hope to be a part of the movement for dignity and respect for farm workers!

Come to our first meeting on Monday, Sept. 30 from 8-9pm in Chemistry T112!

We will talk about our goals this semester and how we can inform students about their food and the people who grow it.
