  • 9/12 UConn Climbing Team Make Up Tryouts

Want to join the #1 Collegiate Climbing Team in the Northeast? Read EVERYTHING below! There's a lot of info, but if you still have any questions feel free to reach out!

We are an indoor competitive rock climbing team that practice and compete the full school year. We work together on climbing problems and workouts, go on outdoor expeditions when possible, and have pre comp pasta parties! After sending hard at competitions we stop at diners as a team, and after working hard at practice we reward ourselves with the traditional late night whitney run. The team is a great commitment with just as great friendships and physical/mental gains.

    General Team Info!

-Joining the team is a big commitment! Be prepared to spend 2 nights a week at structured team practice at Central Rock Gym (CRG) in Glastonbury, times and days tbd from the schedules of the team members.

    - We also require you to climb/train outside of practice at least once a week.

-At a minimum our team will be attending one competition in the fall and three in the spring. Competitions are most often on Saturdays, and typically take up most of the day. You are expected to attend and compete with the team.

-Joining our team is a year-long commitment, and it is awesome! Your semester dues of $120 go towards your CRG memberships, competition dues, jerseys, and food at team meetings!.

    Make up Tryouts Information!

    When: Thursday, Sept. 12th, 6pm-10:00pm

Where: Meet at X lot at 6pm, we will carpool to CRG Glastonbury from there

What to bring: If you have your own climbing gear, bring that! If you don't, rental gear will be available for you. The day pass for the gym is $18 and it is $5 to rent shoes. You will not need gear to climb on ropes.

After meeting at X lot and then carpooling to the gym, we will all check-in and pay for the pass/rental gear if needed. We will then meet to go over the rules and expectations before the tryout starts. Afterward, we will carpool back to campus to arrive there around 10:00pm. You will get an email from us within a few days with an invitation to the team or an email saying otherwise.

    FAQ:

Do I need experience to try out?

    - No, our tryouts are open to anyone, but it should be noted that since we are a very competitive team having sufficient prior climbing experience is a definite advantage.

What does the tryout look like?

    - Our tryout will be a 3-hour mock competition. You will have that entire time to climb any bouldering problem in the gym. You will note what climbs you complete on a scorecard that we provide. It is a fun and social way to gauge your climbing ability and get to know you as a person.

What if I only climb ropes? I can't boulder!

    - Yes, you can! Bottom line, bouldering is still climbing so you should be able to do it. The gym also requested that we limit the tryout to bouldering to reduce crowding. If you have qualms about this, reach out! We are always happy to talk.

Why aren't we using the new Rec Center climbing wall for tryouts?

-We asked, and we are not allowed to do that. :(

How many people tryout/make the team?

-Typically we have around 50 students tryout, and our team is capped at 26 total spots.

Am I good enough to tryout?

-For males, we estimate you will have to climb V4 or higher consistently to make the team. For females, we estimate that you will have to climb V2 or higher consistently to make the team. That being said, we are actively looking for strong females that can climb V4 or higher as well and really encourage women climbers to attend the make up tryouts. Also, you are definitely good enough to tryout <3
