  • 5/1 Dialogue on Nationalism vs. Patriotism

This is a student-created and run dialogue. Participants will be analyzing and discussing the differences between Nationalism and Patriotism and how they relate to democracy specifically in America. We will be looking at the Webster dictionary definition of both terms, read a section from Jeremy Rabkin’s review of a piece from Walter Berns, both being highly touted professors of Law and History and are both very conservative. Then we will watch a short clip from the film “Johnny Got His Gun” and open up the tables for broader discussion. An excerpt from Alexis de Tocqueville will also be used and handed to the tables as extra material. This is a conversation, not a debate, and is intended to open a space for people of different political positions to discuss a crucial issue of our day. Food will be served (DP Dough!).
