Perry's Revenge: The story and discovery of the wreck of the USS Revenge

By Charles Buffum, Owner/Manager of Cottrell Brewing Co. (Pawcatuck) & Craig Harger, Retired, Industrial Gas Specialist

Craig and Charlie met in 1996 when Craig began to supply carbon dioxide gas to Cottrell Brewing. They have been diving together ever since. Collectively, they have over 50 years of diving experience. They have logged hundreds of dives in the waters of Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound, but have also dived in Bermuda, Florida, many Caribbean islands, Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica, Venezuela, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea between them. The pursuit to find the remains of the 1811 wreck of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s first command, USS Revenge, began in 2005. After locating the wreck in a dangerous passage off the coast of Rhode Island, they logged nearly 100 dives on the site to identify artifacts and to verify the site as that of the USS Revenge. They announced the find in 2011 on the bicentennial of the sinking and the story was carried by all major US newspapers through the Associated Press, several UK and Canadian newspapers, local NBC, CBS and FOX affiliated TV networks, Wreck Diver Magazine, Sport Diver Magazine, Ink Magazine, and Ocean House Living Magazine. They continue to work with the US Navy History and Heritage Command on the site’s mapping and excavation process.
