The America Reads program seeks to strengthen students’ reading and writing skills through individualized and group tutoring in pre-K through 12th grade. The program works to decrease student illiteracy in schools in surrounding communities and provide support in classroom settings to create a positive learning experience for the students. America Reads participants lower the student to adult ratio in the classroom and provide additional academic support. Our partnering sites include Kinsella Elementary in Hartford, Southeast Elementary School in Mansfield, Center School in Willington, Windham Center Elementary, North Windham Elementary, Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, Community Children's Center, and Mansfield Discovery Depot. We are the only Community Outreach program that works in Hartford!! UConn participants work in a classroom for approximately 2 hours each week (with transportation provided to and from locations) and attend biweekly site meetings and monthly trainings to develop tutoring skills and strategies!
