Mary Ellen Welch, Extension Educator, UConn

Dr. Pamela Rubinoff, Coastal Resilience Specialist, University of Rhode Island

The Universities of Connecticut and Rhode Island have partnered on a USDA Smith-Lever (Special Needs) grant to identify storm preparedness strategies for coastal communities. The  Connecticut team engaged with local officials and community leaders to identify critical issues and high risk populations and to design town based templates. Education focused upon advance preparation of households, communication planning, food safety, emergency kits, securing important household records, equine preparedness, and barn-safe construction. In Rhode Island, the coastal resilience specialist developed Rapid PACE - a storm mapping, planning and assessment tool. Municipal officials, coastal communities, and residents can assess potential storm hazards and receive user friendly reports that summarize potential storm impact on specific land parcels.
