In response to the widespread flu outbreak with enhanced influenza activity, State Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Raul Pino has launched a statewide influenza vaccination campaign. Influenza Vaccination Clinics will be held by participating local Health Departments on January 27, 2018.
The Eastern Highlands Health District is offering a flu clinic at the E.O. Smith High School, 1235 Storrs Rd, Storrs from 12 noon until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27th. Flu shots are available for adults as well as children age 3 to 18.
Flu season begins in late fall, usually peaks in mid to late winter and can continue through early spring. The influenza virus is expected to circulate for many weeks more so the risk of infection is expected to continue.
Vaccination remains the best method of protection. The CDC continues to recommend the use of the current influenza vaccine as it is effective in reducing the risk of disease, the severity of illness, and the probability of death by 50%.
Aside from the vaccine, the CDC recommends that people take their own steps to avoid the flu. This includes taking everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs such as avoiding close contact with people who are sick, if sick limiting contact with others as much as possible, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and frequently washing your hands.
If you are feeling sick with flu like symptoms they should seek medical attention. If you get the flu, antiviral drugs prescribed by your primary care provider can be used to treat your illness.
