  • 1/9 Classroom Assessment Scoring System Training

Project LIFT and the Renzulli Center for Creativity, Gifted Education, and Talent Development will be hosting a 2-day training from 8:30am-5:30 PM on the CLASS observation tool Tuesday, January 9th and Wednesday, January 10th in Tasker 12. It is free to attend, but we are capped to an enrollment of 15 people. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. You must be able to attend for the full time both days. Here is some information about the assessment:

Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS; Pianta, La Paro, & Hamre, 2004, 2008). The CLASS is an observational tool used in measuring teacher-student interactions. The measure uses a 7-point Likert scale of quality across 10 dimensions related to factors of social-emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support. Each factor has high internal consistency between the 3-4 dimensions within it. Research has shown connection between the three factors and student outcomes, with instructional support and classroom organization categories relating most to achievement.

The CLASS focuses on the quality of classroom interactional processes. This differs from other measurement tools that focus on the content of the physical environment, available materials, or a specific curriculum. For CLASS, the physical environment (including materials) and curriculum matter in the context of how teachers put them to use in their interactions with children. The CLASS is organized to assess three broad domains of interactions among teachers and children: Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support. Each domain includes several dimensions. Collectively, these eleven dimensions assess the extent to which teachers are effectively supporting children’s development, both social and academic.
