  • 10/4 Legacy Speaker Event: Weapons of Math Destruction

In the age of Big Data, where the human experience is increasingly reduced to algorithms and numbers, how are the decisions that we make in our lives influenced (and manipulated) by mathematical models? What is the impact of these mathematical models on individuals, organizations, and society as a whole? Join the Leadership Legacy Experience for a discussion on Big Data and the mathematical algorithms that are affecting society with Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction. Despite the effort to create systems of measurement and evaluation that eliminated human bias and relied instead on ‘impersonal, logical’ mathematics, the algorithms that determine things like teacher evaluation, home loans, college and university rankings, and prison sentences are being shown to instead increase inequality. Have we instead created impenetrable, opaque systems of discrimination? How do we reevaluate our algorithms and better understand Big Data?
