  • 7/11 Finding Fresh Food at Spring Valley Student Farm

Everyone welcome to join us for Tuesday Tour on July 11 at UConn Spring Valley Student Farm.

Summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, dill, kale, lettuce, arugula, bush beans, corn …

Just imagine all the great meals you can make from fresh New England produce this summer!

Stop by the Farm this Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00. We will provide you with some tips on how to grow your own wholesome food or where you can find fresh food to purchase locally.

The 11 students living and working at SVSF will lead you on a guided tour of the fields, greenhouses and edible forest garden where they cultivate a wide variety of sustainably grown vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and small fruits.

If you are interested in beekeeping, we would be happy to show you our apiary where some of our very important pollinators reside. On the tour, you will also learn about several ongoing projects including an undergraduate Chemical Engineering student’s Air Quality Monitoring IDEA grant, Aquaponic IDEA grant, and Solar Thermal heated greenhouse.

Would you like to roll up your sleeves and play in the soil? Would you like to learn about food production using organic methods? Then join us on Tuesdays for some hands-on fun with plants and soil.  No previous experience necessary! We provide the tools, techniques and opportunity to explore the fascinating world of healthy local food production. Remember to dress for outdoor conditions.

Our produce is available for purchase at the Farm Fresh Market, in front of Homer Babbidge Library, every Thursday from 11:30 to 1:30 now through September. Enjoy our products prepared in a delicious meal at Chuck and Augie’s restaurant (note Chuck and Augie’s is closed from June 26 through July 30, 2017) and One Plate Two Plates in the Student Union and at select dining halls.

Spring Valley Student Farm is collaboration with Dining Services, Residential Life, College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, EcoHouse as part of First Year Programs and Learning Communities, Office of Environmental Policy, and Office of Public Engagement – Service Learning.
