  • BME Dept: Stand up Device-Human Subjects Requested

Dr. Krystyna Gielo-Perczak, of the Biomedical Engineering Department, graduate and undergraduate student researchers are seeking research participants for a study assessing the effectiveness of a senior design prototype of device which can be used to aid in the sit to stand motion. The study will compare participants’ center of pressure velocity from a chair and the device.

We seek 30 UConn students who do not experience difficulty standing up from a seated position, and have not had any recent thoracic or lumbar surgeries.

EMG sensors will be placed on the participant’s quadriceps, hamstrings and calves as participants perform the standing up on a force platform. The estimated time of the experiment is approximately 45 minutes-1 hour.

During the study, participants will be asked to stand up from a sitting position on a regular chair and with an application of a device.

Participant’s data will be confidential and used towards the improvement of the quality life of patients with cerebral palsy.

Eligibility for the study requires men and women who are:

    • Between the ages of 18 and 25 years
    • No recent thoracic or lumbar surgeries

This study was approved by the UConn IRB, Protocol #H16-051, “Sit to Stand Assist Device Trials”.
