  • New Course in Substance Use Epi at UConn Health

A new course in substance use and psychiatric epidemiology will be taught at UConn Health during the Spring 2017 semester.  "Epidemiology of Substance Use Disorders and Psychiatric Co-Morbidities" will provide a comprehensive survey of substance use disorders and related psychiatric co-morbidities. The course will incorporate recent advances in social and psychiatric epidemiology as well as health disparities attributable to sex/gender and race/ethnicity.  It will review research on the prevalence of  major substance use disorders and discuss what is known about the etiology, trends, and global burden of disease related to these disorders. The theme of the course will be how to critically evaluate epidemiological research and how to study the genetic, personality, social and environmental contributions to substance use disorders from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The course will be taught by Dr. Helen Wu and will feature interviews and lectures from leading addiction researchers from around the world.  Class will take place on Wednesdays, 5:30pm-8:30pm.

The course is part of a four-course sequence currently being developed under a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.  The other courses, to be offered in subsequent semesters, are Alcohol and Drug Policy; Clinical, Health Services and Systems Research in Alcohol, Addiction Treatment and Early Intervention; and Research Careers and the Responsible Conduct of Research in Alcohol and Addiction Science).
