School of Business Board Room, Room 321

    Abstract

“Creativity and the generation of innovative ideas are becoming increasingly important in the electronic age as technical knowledge and computation power are becoming readily available in engineering.  Our current education system not only fails to promote creative thinking, but also, fails to retain and nurture high-creative potential students with diverse learning styles that do not fit in the one-size-fits-all model of the current engineering education system.  Students with ADHD are notorious examples of high-potential divergent thinkers and risk-takers that are being academically, psychologically, socially distressed by the way we are teaching engineering.  The significantly high rate of dropout and underrepresentation of engineering students with ADHD is an evidence of the failure of the current education system to recruit, retain, and nurture students with different thinking styles.

In this presentation, I will discuss the findings of an NSF-funded research project to study if students with ADHD characteristics present higher creative potential than peers. I will present the major findings of the project including the specific ADHD-related characteristics that are correlated with creativity constructs and academic performance.“
