Research, Funding, and Awards

  • 11/4 TIP Poster Session at JAX-GM

The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine
Main Lobby, 10 Discovery Drive, Farmington, CT
    Friday, November 4th from 10:00am – 2:00pm

Purpose: To provide JAX researchers with an exclusive look at the research & development underway within TIP startup companies and to encourage collaborations between JAX and UConn TIP ventures.  TIP companies are working to commercialize technologies from UConn as well as many from other universities such as MIT, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Notre Dame, Yale and UVM in addition to innovations emerging from industry labs. This session will provide insight on opportunities for collaborations in Farmington that reach well beyond UConn Health.

Program Overview:  UConn’s Technology Incubation Program (TIP) was started in 2003 with the goal of accelerating the growth and success of technology-based startups. The program has helped over 85 companies since then, with approximately 60% of all of these companies successfully graduating the program. This compares favorably to the nationwide success rate of 25%. TIP companies have had a big impact on the economy, raising $48 million in grants and another $79 million in debt and equity while generating over $44 million in revenues since 2004.

TIP companies have a strong connection with the research output of the University of Connecticut. Each company can access UConn’s high-tech facilities and work with the University’s expert faculty in various forms of research partnerships. They are treated as members of the UConn community.  Additionally, each TIP client has access to business advice, mentors, education programing and networking opportunities that promote access to funding.

The TIP portfolio is predominantly composed of ventures in the biomedical sciences field, with companies developing immunotherapy platforms for cancer and novel technologies to treat autoimmune disease using Mesenchymal Stem Cells. We also have several startups advancing microbiome-based technology, which is yet another area where opportunity exists for synergy with researchers at The Jackson Labs.

Companies that join TIP are carefully selected to ensure that both their technology and business concept offer promise. Additionally, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center operates its Innovation Center at TIP with four research teams seeking to pursue commercial opportunities around innovations they developed through their work at CCMC.
