The annual Gene and Georgia Mittelman Lecture in the Arts
“Martin Johnson Heade and the Rediscovery of American Painting” a talk by Dr. Theodore E. Stebbins Jr., Curator of American Art, Emeritus, of the Harvard Art Museums.
Dr. Stebbins has devoted years of study to the American artist Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904). He published two catalogues raisonne on Heade, the most recent in 2000: The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade: A Critical Analysis and Catalogue Raisonne, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2000.
Dr. Stebbins is Curator of American Art, Emeritus, of the Harvard Art Museums. He retired from Harvard in 2014, the same year he published American Paintings at Harvard: Volume One: Artists Born Before 1826, which formed part of a scholarly analysis of Harvard's extensive holdings of American Art. From 1977 to 1999, Stebbins was the John Moors Cabot Curator of American Paintings at the MFA in Boston where he organized nineteen exhibitions, guided the museum's acquisition of over three hundred paintings from 17th century limners to Andy Warhol. From 1968 to 1977, he was Curator of American Paintings at Yale University Art Gallery as well as Associate Professor of Art History at Yale.
