    UConn Summer Learning Communities in Cape Town, South Africa

    Tuesday, October 4, 2016

    A four-week summer study abroad program open to residents of all UConn Learning Communities and other interested students. Through lectures, guest speakers, films, and cultural events designed to provide insight into the history and politics of South Africa, this 3 credit experiential learning course will help students analyze their time spent living, learning, and working abroad and reflect upon cross-cultural competencies and personal identity development. The program incorporates a 9-day service-learning component, visits to historic and cultural sites of interest such as Robben Island and a two day trip to a game reserve to see the animals for which South Africa is famous.     Where can I go? How much does it cost? Come learn the basics of studying abroad through UConn! In this presentation, you will learn how to navigate the Education Abroad site, hear about different types of study abroad programs, financing your time abroad, and the application process. Meet past participants and have all your questions answered.

     

    UConn Urban Semester Info Session

     The Urban Semester Program offers students a tremendous opportunity for service learning and public service in Hartford, Connecticut. As a participant in the program, you are offered the opportunity to work in the heart of the city’s human services, government agencies, community and non-profit organizations. Depending on your area of interest and major, your internship can address issues facing the city, ranging from education to homelessness and youth issues, the criminal justice system and the changing welfare system. Students participate in two 3 credit seminars that meet weekly, in addition to a 9-credit internship. Participants will earn credit for:

    INTD 3590:  Urban Field Studies (9 credits) OR POLS 3991: Supervised Field Work (9 credits)

    INTD 3594: Urban Semester Field Work Seminar (3 credits)

    INTD 3584: Seminar in Urban Problems (3 credits)
