English Stress and Intonation for International Faculty and TAs
Cynthia Deroma, CETL – Faculty Development Programs
Even though many people rely on individual sound (segmental) differences to describe the way speakers of other languages pronounce English, there is a body of research suggesting that miscommunication issues in the classroom arise mainly from the use of suprasegmental features like stress, intonation, speed, pausing, and chunking. These features affect not just comprehension of the words within a sentence, but also the perception and interpretation of attitudes such as enthusiasm, confidence, empathy, and interest, which can have a strong impact on learning and student evaluations.  This workshop will offer an overview of English suprasegmental features and suggestions for practice.

    Friday, October 21st
    11:15-1:10pm
    ROWE Center, room 318

A boxed lunch will be provided.  If you have special dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten free, or both) please e-mail Stacey Valliere.  Requests made within 7 days of seminar will not be honored.
