Shakespeare’s Songbook and Tallis’s Spem in alium
Performed by the UConn Collegium Musicum
Eric Rice, Director
Shakespeare's plays are replete with music; it plays substantial allegorical and symbolic roles in the plays, was performed both within the drama and as incidental music, and is mentioned by numerous characters. The UConn Collegium Musicum under the direction of Eric Rice explores music that was either discussed or performed within the plays, but also performs several motets and anthems from Shakespeare’s time.
The conclusion of the concert will be a performance of Thomas Tallis’s renowned 40-part Spem in alium, performed during Shakespeare’s lifetime at the 1610 investiture of Henry Frederick as Prince of Wales.
