I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Carol Polifroni as the Dean of the School of Nursing, effective July 1, 2016. She is a nationally renowned researcher and educator who has spent a lifetime working to advance the nursing profession in the state and throughout the nation. I’m grateful that she has agreed to assume this important leadership role at the University of Connecticut.
During her distinguished career, Dr. Polifroni received more than $5M in grants from federal agencies and foundations to pursue her research in the enhancement of the diversity of the nursing workforce and the preparation of tomorrow’s educators, and advised 25 doctoral students who are now leading productive careers in the profession. For her many contributions in research and education, she’s been awarded Fellow Status in the Academy of Nurse Educators and the Josephine Dolan Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education. Dr. Polifroni also brings extensive experience through her leadership involvement in the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center and its Magnet Recognition Program, the American Association of Nurse Executives, as well as the American Association of University Professors.
Dr. Polifroni is deeply committed to the education of the next generation of nurses. In awarding Dr. Polifroni the Connecticut Nurses Association Mary Jane Williams Diamond Jubilee Award for Lifetime Achievement in Nursing, the citation captured the essence of her commitment to education – “The threads that have been evident in Dr. Polifroni’s nursing career have revolved around a foundation of creative thinking related to the science of nursing, a passion for assisting people to be able to enter the profession, a dedication to teaching future nurses, and a strong belief in the importance of understanding nursing standards of excellence and supporting their development.”
