  • 20-Minute Mentor: How to Reduce Test Anxiety

Every Monday, Magna Publications provides UConn faculty members with access to a 20-minute video from its “Monday Morning Mentor” presentation series.  This series offers video-based programs designed to answer a specific question related to teaching and learning, delivering actionable insights in highly focused 20-minute presentations designed to fit busy schedules.

This week’s program, “How Can Students Use Self-Compassion to Reduce Test Anxiety?” can be accessed at http://www.mondaymorningmentors.com; use the following password: test55

Sometimes students get in their own way. They panic before exams and fill their heads with worries about failure. This program shows you how to help your students reframe the way they look at their exams and themselves. When they learn to love themselves a little more, they will fear exams a little less. When you are finished with this program, you will be able to

    • Understand the difference between fear and anxiety
    • Appreciate that test anxiety decreases the validity of test results
    • Recognize the difference between traditional test anxiety interventions and the Mindful Self-Compassion approach
    • Articulate the benefits of mindful self-compassion
    • Facilitate students’ use of mindful self-compassion applications
    • Apply several specific techniques to reduce test anxiety

The video will be available from Monday, May 9, through Sunday, May 15, 2016.
