  • 5/11 Connecticut Student Writers Honored at Jorgensen

On Wednesday, May 11, the Connecticut Writing Project-Storrs at the University of Connecticut will host the 28th Annual Student Recognition Night to recognize K-12 students from across Connecticut who have been published or honored in Connecticut Student Writers magazine.  The event will take place from 5 to 7 PM in Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut.

This year’s event will feature young adult author Lynda Mullaly Hunt, author of One for the Murphys and Fish in a Tree, which Kirkus Reviews calls a “feel-good story of friendship and unconventional smarts,” and compares to R. J. Palacio’s Wonder.

More than 1,700 submissions of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction were made to the magazine this year, from the students of 400 teachers from more than 150 different schools.  Following Ms. Hunt’s keynote address, one student from each grade level will read his or her writing to the audience, which is expected to exceed 800.

There will be catering in the lobby prior to the readings, provided by Taking Care of Tummies, and in one of its final gestures as an independent bookstore, the UConn Coop will provide a book-selling table where attendees will be able to purchase copies of Ms. Hunt’s books.  Ms. Hunt will also be available for book signings at the end of the evening.

All 78 published and 168 honored student writers, as well as 25 student artists, will be called to the stage to meet the author, receive a certificate and a copy of the magazine.  Thirty-eight teachers who had multiple students honored in the magazine will also be recognized.  Additional copies of the magazine will be on sale in the lobby or can be downloaded or purchased from the CWP’s website—cwp.uconn.edu.
