  • Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Program Director

    Call for Nominations:

Director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies Program

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks nominations or self-nominations for the Director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies Program.  Nominations are welcome from tenured, tenure-track, and in-residence faculty from any School or College at the University.  The Directorship of the WGSS Program presents an exciting opportunity to re-examine and re-envision the mission and activities of the program in conjunction with the relevant constituencies across the university.

This is an internal appointment.  The WGSS Program is an interdisciplinary academic program situated in CLAS with jointly appointed and affiliated faculty from across the Schools and Colleges of the University.  The Director reports to the Dean of CLAS.  This is a 10-month appointment for five years.

The Director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies Program must be an associate or full professor from any School or College who has a distinguished record of feminist, gender, and/or sexualities research and scholarship, publication, and teaching, and who understands the WGSS curriculum (at both the graduate and undergraduate levels). (Faculty receiving tenure by fall 2016 are also eligible for nomination.)  A candidate should share the program’s commitment to interdisciplinary studies as well as have demonstrated experience and success in working with diverse populations. The candidate should also possess a record of active participation and have a national reputation within the interdiscipline of women’s, gender, and sexualities studies, which also may be manifested through work in a home department.

In considering nominees, the following qualities are of particular interest to the search committee:

    • Resourcefulness: leadership in developing and achieving goals in teaching, research, and service.
    • Ability to foster an environment supportive of teaching, research, and service.
    • Administrative and organizational skills; team- and consensus-building skills.
    • Experience with managing program budgets.
    • Ability to work with department heads and other directors of interdisciplinary programs.
    • Fairness and integrity.
    • Ability to direct and support staff.
    • Accessibility; ability and willingness to communicate with all constituencies and strive to expand those constituencies.
    • Ability to effectively represent the program.
    • Understanding and support of the program’s role in the college and university.

Please send your nominations to Maryann Markowski in the CLAS Dean’s Office (maryann.markowsky@uconn.edu). The source of all nominations will be kept confidential.  No one will be presented to the WGSS Director Search Committee as a candidate without prior consent of the nominee. Nominations should be submitted as soon as possible, but will be accepted until noon on Monday, April 11, 2016.

The Search Committee includes Thomas Long, Veronica Makowsky, Micki McElya, Shirley Roe (chair), Cathy Schlund-Vials, and Daniel Silvermint.
