  • 20-Minute Mentor: Providing Feedback on Writing

Every Monday, Magna Publications provides UConn faculty members with access to a 20-minute video from its “Monday Morning Mentor” presentation series.  This series offers video-based programs designed to answer a specific question related to teaching and learning, delivering actionable insights in highly focused 20-minute presentations designed to fit busy schedules.

This week’s program, “How Do I Give Feedback that Improves Student Writing?” can be accessed at http://www.mondaymorningmentors.com; use the following password: feedback2

Trying to teach students to improve their writing can be like trying to teach cats to fetch: Demonstrate all you want, encourage all you want, implore all you want; you’re apt to be met with nothing but blinks. We share seven novel feedback techniques that will motivate your students and drive real improvement in their writing. After viewing this program, you’ll learn how to

    • Gain student “buy-in” to the feedback process
    • Separate feedback from grading for better results
    • Use benchmarking and “gateway” techniques to streamline the feedback process
    • Make feedback more “actionable” for students

The video will be available from Monday, March 21, through Sunday, March 27, 2016.
