    Ebenezer Bassett was the 1st African American to serve as a U.S. ambassador. Bassett was born in Derby, CT in the early 1800s and graduated from the Normal school ( now Connecticut Central State University) becoming the 1st African-American to do so. He worked as an educator for several years prior to beginning work in government. He was appointed as U.S. diplomat to Haiti by President Ulysses S Grant becoming one of the highest ranking African-American officials in government at that time.
