  • 20-Minute Mentor: Assigning Student Groups

How Do I Assign Students to Groups?

Every Monday, Magna Publications provides UConn faculty members with access to a 20-minute video from its “Monday Morning Mentor” presentation series.  This series offers video-based programs designed to answer a specific question related to teaching and learning, delivering actionable insights in highly focused 20-minute presentations designed to fit busy schedules.

This week’s program, “How Do I Assign Students to Groups?” can be accessed at http://www.mondaymorningmentors.com; use the following password:   groups5

Despite the widespread acceptance and demonstrated success of group learning, many teachers do not know how to create small groups effectively. Learn key factors involved in successfully facilitating group learning and teach you the benefits of group work. When you are finished with this program, you will be able to

    • Clearly establish goals for group work
    • Ensure that your grading policy is aligned with your goals for group work
    • Involve students in grading their group mates
    • Follow a decision tree to decide on group composition, number of group members, and group grading policies

This video will be available from Monday, February 1, through Sunday, February 7, 2016.
