    Risa Lieberwitz, Esq.

    “Civility and Academic Freedom”

National AAUP General Counsel; Professor, Industrial & Labor Relations, Cornell University

    September 30, 2015, 1:00 PM

    Storrs Student Union Theatre

Professor Lieberwitz will address the implications for free speech and academic freedom in calls for "civility" in university discourse.  University policy proposals take a range of forms, including civility and speech codes, trigger warnings, social media restrictions, and broad anti-harassment policies.  Professor Lieberwitz will analyze the justifications for these proposals and discuss alternative ways to promote full and free expression by students and faculty.

Risa Lieberwitz is a Professor of Labor and Employment Law in the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) and an Associate of the Worker Institute at Cornell.  She currently holds an appointment as General Counsel of the AAUP.
