Navigating the Unknown
Breaking out of the trap set by perceived limitations
A Talk by Daniel Kish - The Real Life Batman
Monday, September 14, 2015 6:30PM
Konover Auditorium, Dodd Center
Daniel Kish is the President of World Access for the Blind, a non-profit founded in 2000 to facilitate “the self-directed achievement of people with all forms of blindness” to assist with increasing public awareness about their strengths and capabilities. Kish, who has been blind since he was 13 months old, is the first totally blind individual to be certified as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist and has been called the real life “Bat-man.” Daniel is an expert in human echolocation, so much so that you can find him on his unassisted solo hikes and riding his bicycle around town.
Kish will be visiting UConn and, in addition to providing a hands on workshop on echolocation for a small group of students, will talk to the entire campus community about navigating the unknown by breaking out of the trap set by perceived limitations. His unique journey provides a perspective on challenging norms and limitations, whether physical, emotional, or mental by welcoming new approaches, ideas, and testing new concepts head on.
The Student Activities Leadership Office and the Center for Students with Disabilities are welcoming Daniel to campus on Monday September 14th at the Dodd Konover Auditorium, doors open at 6:00pm and lecture begins promptly at 6:30pm. You don’t want to miss out on Kish’s amazing story or the opportunity to ask him questions on being the real life “bat-man.”
