We write to inform you that effective July 2015, the responsibility for oversight and management of UConn’s Department of Recreational Services will shift from the Division of Athletics to the Division of Student Affairs. Recreational Services includes the student recreation center currently located in the Field House, as well as Intramurals and Tournaments, Bodywise, Outdoor Adventure, and Special Programs.
Cyndi Costanzo, Executive Director of Recreational Services, and her capable staff, will continue in their current roles. Cyndi will continue to work in collaboration with Paul McCarthy, Deputy Director of Athletics and Evan Feinglass, Associate Director of Athletics, to ensure a seamless transition for the department and continue to support and promote all programs of Recreational Services.
With planning for a new student recreation center currently underway, we felt this was the appropriate time to make this change. Housing recreational services under Student Affairs is very typical among many of UConn’s peer institutions as part of Student Affairs’ mission is to focus on the overall health and well-being of students, making it a logical home for recreation.
Cyndi will continue to work closely with the student recreation advisory committee created in January 2015, which will provide input from students as plans for the new student recreation center develop.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our offices.
Sincerely,
Michael Gilbert, Vice President for Student Affairs
Warde Manuel, Director of Athletics
