What’s the Big Deal about ‘BIG DATA’?

    ABSTRACT

This is the latest term that is being used to capture the data-deluge phenomena faced in science, engineering, technology, and everyday life. So what’s new about ‘Big Data’? What’s happening in research, applications, education, funding, and the development of infrastructure to support Big Data initiatives? Are statisticians playing a key role in the big data revolution? What is Data Science and how is it different from Statistics? How can Statistics become even more central to Data Science? The presentation will discuss a number of these topics from one person’s perspective.
