    Dean, School of Medicine

    The University of Connecticut is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Medicine.  The successful candidate must be currently a faculty member at the rank of full professor in the UConn School of Medicine.  This position offers an exceptional opportunity during a period of robust growth for an energetic and visionary individual to enhance the status of the School of Medicine and to raise its profile to national preeminence. The successful applicant will provide leadership and foster excellence in medical and biomedical research, teaching and engagement.  The Dean of Medicine will also play a transformative role in the development and implementation of the exciting Bioscience Connecticut initiative.

    The Dean reports directly to the Provost at the University of Connecticut, and is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Medicine. The Dean guides a robust scholarship and research agenda, and spearheads effective undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, and collaborative academic programs. He/She will also be responsible for assuring a diverse, inclusive and supportive environment.  The Dean will be a key partner in promoting excellence in patient care and faculty medical practice development in collaboration with the VP for Health affairs. 

    The Dean will work closely with faculty and staff to develop an innovative strategic plan with clear over-arching goals and metrics to guide the growth of the School.  Key elements of the strategic plan will include:

    • Growing extramurally-funded research and scholarship programs through federal grants and industry support;
    • Developing innovative curriculum and recruitment programs for medical students, house staff and fellows, graduate students, and postdocs;
    • Enhancing diversity at all levels through proactive recruitment, retention and promotion of faculty, staff, and students;
    • Identifying priorities for investment through Bioscience Connecticut;
    • Increasing philanthropic support for capital and endowed projects;
    • Supporting cross-campus collaborations and promoting partnerships with other disciplines in the context of clinical care, education and research;
    • Fostering scholarly endeavors and advances in science, education, and innovation.

    The successful candidate should have a medical degree from a US accredited medical school. Exceptionally qualified applicants with a PhD degree and relevant experience in the area of medical education will also be considered.

    Candidates must have a demonstrated record of success as a well-respected leader within a complex organization, excellent communication skills, and a consultative management style. He/She should have an abiding commitment to achieving excellence in the core mission of a flagship research university.  He/she must demonstrate the interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including other academic deans and leaders in the university, government leaders, donors, and affiliated organizations.
