  • Journalism Professor Stanton On Campaign Trail

The improbable comeback of twice-convicted felon Buddy Cianci as mayor of Providence, Rhode Island has kept UConn journalism professor Mike Stanton busy this election season.

Stanton, whose unauthorized biography of Cianci, The Prince of Providence, was a New York Times bestseller, has chronicled the charismatic but corrupt ex-mayor’s comeback, and what it says about America’s love affair with political rogues, for The New York Times Sunday Review and in a lead story for The Boston Globe’s Capital section on politics.

Stanton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The Providence Journal before coming to UConn as an associate professor in the fall of 2013, also has been interviewed for a number of television and radio segments on Cianci, including CBS Sunday Morning this week and the PBS NewsHour.

Before and after teaching his Newswriting I class last week, Stanton also found himself gathering absentee voter data at Providence City Hall and knocking on doors at an elderly housing complex to break another story for the Globe, about a Rhode Island state police investigation of possible mail-ballot fraud among elderly voters.
