  • Essential Updates for Clery Act Compliance

Sent on behalf of Barbara O’Connor, Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police:

I am pleased to announce that the Division of Public Safety has created a Clery Compliance Department which will further assist members of the University of Connecticut community with their Clery Act compliance efforts. This department will be directed by the Clery Compliance Coordinator, Caitlin Farr, and has recently launched a website: www.clery.uconn.edu. This website contains information about the Clery Act, contact information for the Clery Compliance Department, definitions and requirements for Campus Security Authorities (CSAs), and a new online CSA reporting form, which will allow CSAs to submit their crime reports directly to the Clery Compliance Department. The website also contains a link to the current Annual Security Report, a Clery Act training module provided by the Department of Education, as well as resources for crime victims/survivors.

I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight some new information related to our compliance efforts. The 2013 Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) will amend the Clery Act, bringing many new guidelines and requirements. These amendments are in the final stages of negotiation and will be signed into law in the Fall of 2014. However, the University is in the process of honoring these amendments and efforts will be ongoing. These amendments include additional required crime categories (Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking), as well as new definitions for Sexual Offenses. CSAs should begin to make themselves familiar with these changes and additions.

For more information on the VAWA amendments to the Clery Act, the Clery Compliance Department has created a resource page at www.clery.uconn.edu/vawa-amendments/ .

    Thank you for your support,

    Chief Barbara O’Connor
