  • Associate VP for Student Affairs/Dean of Students

I am pleased to announce that Eleanor JB Daugherty has been selected as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. Her appointment is effective August 1, 2014. Elly is a highly accomplished student affairs leader with a proven record of success. She brings exceptional experience to the senior leadership team in the Division of Student Affairs.

Elly joins us from The University of Chicago, where she has served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Associate Dean of the College for Student Life and Alumni Affairs since 2010. Her prior experience includes appointments as Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia University, and she held a prior position at the University of Michigan. Elly earned a BA degree at The University of Chicago and completed her masters of higher and postsecondary education. She is currently finishing her doctorate at Columbia University. Elly's research focuses upon how access to higher education is perceived and experienced by under-represented students.

At The University of Chicago Elly supervises a staff of over 50 professionals in six separate offices including: Student Activities, University Community Service Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of LGBTQ Student Life, Office of International Affairs and the College Programing Office. She has provided leadership and collaborated widely on her campus, creating programs which foster student success and vibrant out-of-class experiences for students. She has worked to enhance diversity education programs for student organizations and been instrumental in the development of policy and protocols for campus emergency response and campus discipline issues.

Elly is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and is particularly active on the regional level in supporting new professional development and conference development. "UConn is an ambitious and confident institution and I am eager to contribute to this great work. The staff, faculty, and students I met throughout the interview process are a testament to this and I am excited to be here."

The leadership provided by Dr. Jennifer Lease-Butts as Search Committee Chair is deeply appreciated as well as the many hours dedicated to the recruitment for this role by the entire Search Committee as they worked to assist the Division of Student Affairs in finding exceptional leadership for this critical new role at UConn.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Elly and her family to the UConn community.

    Best,

    Michael Gilbert
