  • 6/21 Help Families Connect with Nature

On June 21-22, 2014, about 250 Connecticut families will come to Storrs for a fun and educational day with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the UConn community for The Great Park Pursuit: The Connecticut State Parks Family Adventure.

The event will include daytime and evening activities led by DEEP staff and UConn volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for departments and programs across UConn to showcase their efforts and engage with motivated learners—and future UConn students.

DEEP invites faculty, students and staff to help make this event memorable by creating and leading hands-on activities that will guide families in making an immediate and unfiltered connection with nature. There are opportunities for everyone from STEM disciplines to the humanities, social sciences and fine arts to share their appreciation of the natural environment.

To participate, email Mark.Rudnicki@uconn.edu, associate professor in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment. Please contact Mark by May 1.

Each year since 2006, the CT DEEP has engaged in the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) movement with the goal of enhancing environmental literacy between kindergarten and 12th grade and fostering understanding, analysis and solutions to environmental challenges. As part of NCLI, CT DEEP has pioneered a signature program, initiated by past DEEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy, entitled The Great Park Pursuit—The Connecticut State Parks Family Adventure to introduce children to the wonder of nature for their own health and well-being, for the future of environmental conservation and for the preservation of the beauty, character and communities of the great State of Connecticut.
