UConn is sponsoring the “2014 Garden Conference” on Friday, March 21, 2014. The conference will be held at the University of Connecticut, Lewis B. Rome Commons in Storrs, CT.
The 2014 UConn Garden Conference features an exciting lineup of top national speakers and local experts on various aspects of garden design, maintenance, and plant selection. This all-day conference offers valuable educational opportunities for gardeners of all levels, from the casual gardener to the Advanced Master Gardener. The speakers featured at the conference will include:
- Keynote speakers Nancy DuBrule-Clemente, Owner of Natureworks, an organic garden center, landscape design, installation and maintenance service in Northford, CT and Stephanie Cohen, Horticultural Consultant and author from Collegeville, PA who will be presenting a combined presentation. Nancy will discuss tall plants in the garden that are statuesque, specimen plants, and provide architectural structure. Stephanie will talk about short perennials for the front border that are compact, vertically challenged, fillers, and are often used as ground covers.
- Kelly Gill, Pollinator Conservation Specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, who will be presenting a talk entitled, Conserving Pollinating Insects with Pollinator Friendly Gardening.
- Mark Weathington, Assistant Director of the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University, who will be speaking on plants to fit problem spots in the landscape.
- Jonathan Lehrer, Assistant Professor at Farmingdale State College (SUNY) on Long Island, who will be presenting a talk entitled, Useful Native Woody Plants for Connecticut.
- Amy Ziffer, Owner of A Shady Lady Garden Design in Sherman, CT, who will be speaking on how to garden successfully in shady areas.
Program and registration information, including online registration, is available at www.2014garden.uconn.edu. There is a pre-registration fee of $90 per person if postmarked on or before March 14th. The fee is $100 per person if postmarked after March 14th or for walk-ins. Student registration is $25 with valid school ID. Registration is limited and nonrefundable. Included with your registration are an information packet, lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, free parking, and selected autographed books plus a wide array of gardening books at the Garden Conference bookstore. Plants are also available for purchase.
