    • ·         Are you an advisor, counselor, instructor, residential life staff, safety officer or work in any capacity where students share their often difficult stories with you?
    • ·         What is the toll of being on the “front lines” of student life?
    • ·         Are you aware of the signs and symptoms of “vicarious trauma?”
    • ·         What is your plan for self-care?

How can you work in ways that minimize vicarious trauma while maximizing positive effective relationships with students? Today’s college students turn to any number of professionals for assistance when they struggle. Often they share with us difficult and traumatic stories. This mini conference is designed to help the helpers at the University recognize the signs of vicarious trauma and to develop specific plans for prevention and self-care.  The keynote will be followed by optional time to meet in small groups to consider strategies to address vicarious trauma and staff well-being at the professional, organizational and personal level.

Dr. Pearlman is an award-winning national expert and author of several books, articles and videos on vicarious traumatization including; Transforming the Pain: A Workbook on Vicarious Traumatization, Vicarious Trauma: The Cost of Empathy, and Treating Traumatic Bereavement: A Practitioner’s Guide.

Sponsored by Counseling and Mental Health Service, Student Health Services and the Suicide Prevention Committee
