    Schedule of Events

    Come and be a part of history!

     

    Monday, February 24th: Coffee hour with Las SeñoritasLatinas Unidas Sorority, Sigma Lambda Upsilon chapter. Come and discuss African ancestry within our Latin American roots.  PRLACC at 5:00pm. Light refreshments will be served.

     

    Tuesday, February 25th: “Black is Black: Blackness, Cultural Identity, and Diaspora in Afro-Central American Literature and Culture”.  Join us as we talk with Dr. Dorothy Mosby, author and professor of Spanish at Mt. Holyoke College.  PRLACC, 5:00-6:30. Light refreshments will be served.

     

    Wednesday, February 26th: Film: City of God.  A Brazilian movie that reflects on the lives of two young, Afro-Brazilian men growing up in the favelas of Río de Janiero.  A discussion with Carla Silva-Muhammad and Tyra Lewis will follow.  PRLACC, 5:30-7:30.  Light refreshments will be served.

     

    Thursday, February 27th: Tertulias Caribeñas with Poets and Writers: Aurora Arias (Dominican Poet/Writer), Glaisma Perez-Silva (Puerto Rican Writer/Poet) and Marianela Medrano (Dominican Poet/Writer).  An evening with three local Afro-Hispanic poets/writers, reading and discussing their work.  PRLACC, 5:00pm.  Light refreshments will be served. 

     

    Friday, February 28th:  UConn’s own Dr. Melina Pappademos will be delivering a lively lecture entitled “Black Civic Activism and Counter Narratives of Africa in the Early Cuban Republic”.  PRLACC, 11:45-1:00.  A free, light lunch for the first 20 attendees will be provided.

     

    Events sponsored by Institute for African American Studies, PRLACC, Las Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sigma Lambda Upsilon chapter, Department of Literatures, Cultures and Languages (Spanish Section), Research Colloquium in Performance Studies and Cultural Memory in Latin America.
