  • Graduate Intern Being Sought

    Office of Environmental Policy, University of Connecticut

    15 hour/week position, regular office hours (8:30 – 4:30, M-F)  -- good supervisory and student mentoring/advising skills and experience required. Strong interest in environmental/sustainability issues preferred (i.e., as indicated by graduate studies or research, or by prior undergraduate experience). Compensation:  $15/hour

    This position would begin in March, to replace our outgoing Graduate Student Intern, and would continue through the summer and have the potential to continue for the 2014-2015 academic year.

    Primarily responsible for backing up the GA/UConn Sustainability Coordinator. Three main categories of duties: 

    Supervising undergraduate interns:

    Works with Sustainability Coordinator/GA (and with OEP Director and Administrative Coordinator, as needed) to supervise student interns in the OEP's Sustainability Office

    Assigns projects and allocates the workload to interns, and advises and mentors them to ensure productivity, effectiveness and teamwork

    Reviews and edits the interns' draft plans, reports, meeting notes, announcements, and correspondence to ensure accuracy, completeness, professionalism and consistency with overall objectives and strategies

    In coordination with GA/Sustainability Coordinator, ensures sufficient one-on-one supervisory meetings with each intern and helps plan and conduct intern staff meetings held several times during each semester

    Planning, organizing and conducting sustainability activities:

    Works with Sustainability Coordinator/GA (and with OEP Director and Administrative Coordinator, as needed) to develop, plan, promote and administer programs, initiatives and events related to sustainability in coordination with multiple UConn departments and student organizations. Prepares or oversees preparation of meeting agendas, materials and meeting notes, and ensures follow up on action items; prepares or oversees preparation of summaries of activities and other results through articles and/or photos published through blog posts, social media, e-newsletter and other formats

    Works with GA to update and maintain membership and distribution lists, such as lists for EPAC workgroups and Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF) donors; helps OEP prepare for and conduct EPAC-related meetings and CSF-related fundraising    

    Works with GA and OEP webmaster to write, edit and update various OEP sustainability communications materials, such as website, blog, social media, e-newsletter and other formats

    May attend and report on stakeholder events and meetings on behalf of the OEP

    Metrics and Reporting

    Assists the Director in defining goals, performance metrics and plan for sustainability initiatives throughout the academic year. This entails researching sustainability metrics and performance at peer institutions and across varying education, industry or government sectors, allocating resources, assigning appropriate intern staff, and compiling and updating plan in a table format

    Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness, documents performance trends, including assisting in completing and submitting AASHE STARS and other surveys, oversees related gap analyses and recommends and implements programmatic changes and improvements

    Prepares and/or reviews grant applications, as well as reports and inventories, as required per UConn’s ACUPCC commitment and other programs
