No Spanish or travel experience necessary!

    Indulge in Mexican culture!

Explore the beautiful city of Oaxaca, Mexico!

The UConn Migration Studies Seminar is a two-week study abroad program during May 11-26, 2014 open to both undergraduate and graduate students of all majors where students will explore concepts of migration and Mexican culture in Oaxaca, Mexico. This is a unique UConn 4 credit program, a dynamic introduction to the history, language, sounds, sites, tastes and rhythms of our southern neighbor with a focus on migration to the United States. The city and neighboring towns will be our classrooms as we explore together this beautiful and complex part of the world. Of course, there will be plenty of time to soak up the Mexican sun in the city of the "eternal spring". The small size of the group (10-15 students) allows us to tailor the experience to the specific major/study interests of the individual student.

Oaxaca, named Humanity’s Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO, possesses a rich culture and language with plenty of activities! We will be touring indigenous sites, traveling through street markets, living with a Mexican family, learning Spanish, visiting hot springs and much more! You will take one three-credit course (History of Migration in Las Americas) and one one-credit Linkage Through Language (LTL) Spanish immersion class.

Please note (and tell your parents!) that Oaxaca City is a safe and beautiful location to experience Mexico. Although Mexico has received much bad press in recent years, those reports do not pertain to life in Oaxaca City.
