Pawan Dhingra, Professor and Chair of Sociology, Tuft's University; author of LIFE BEHIND THE LOBBY: Indian American Motel Owners and the American Dream (Stanford Univ. Press), which will be available at the talk, courtesy of UCONN Co-Op Bookstore

Asian Indian Americans have come to own about half of the nation's motels. This achievement furthers notions of American exceptionalism and neoliberal policies. Yet racial, gender, and cultural conflict mark owners' business experiences. This talk explains how owners work within marginalized statuses to uplift themselves. Owners' achievements do not indicate the declining significance of race or gender, and instead show how these social hierarchies operate alongside economic mobility.

Sponsored by Asian+Asian American Studies Institute/CLAS, Sociology and India Studies Program at the University of Connecticut
