  • Laboratory Safety Policies & Procedures

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) remains one of the leaders at the University of Connecticut, proactively establishing safety measures for new students and employees working in a diverse array of laboratory environments with specific, but varying potential hazards.  Potential hazards at the University range from chemical, biological, occupational, radiation, etc.  It is critical that new students or employees working in labs are properly trained and informed of lab specific safety policies and safe equipment use procedures. It is the responsibility of the lab PI to ensure a new student or employee is properly trained before the individual gains access to a lab.

CEE has developed a Laboratory Safety Policies & Procedures manual under the guidance of departmental faculty, staff and UConn EH&S. UConn's Institute of Materials Sciences (IMS) has created a similar manual for their lab use by Faculty, Staff and Students. A guideline or template is available by contacting the CEE Laboratory Supervisor.

UConn's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and the Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC) encourages other university departments, units or individual groups to generate and formalize their own, laboratory specific Safety, Policies & Procedures manual applicable to lab specific activities, equipment usage and potential hazards.
