  • Did Your Student Apply for an External Fellowship?

Faculty - Did one or more of your student mentees submit an application for a nationally-competitive external fellowship this academic year?  If so, you may be eligible for up to $2,000 in professional development funds through UConn's National Fellowships Incentive Program (NFIP).

Under this program, UConn and UCHC faculty are eligible for up to $2,000 in professional development funds for mentoring students (graduate OR undergraduate) through the process of developing proposals and submitting applications for eligible awards.  Details on award eligibility may be found at http://onsf.uconn.edu/nfip.  Since 2016, the Office of National Scholarships & Fellowships (ONSF) has distributed nearly $350,000 in professional development funds to faculty under the auspices of this program -- including more than $50,000 this past fall.

Applications for funds distributed through this program are accepted on a rolling basis through the online application found here, and applications for the spring 2020 round of funding opened on January 22. This round will support faculty whose students submit applications for eligible fellowships between January 1, 2020 and June 1, 2020.

NOTE:  If your student submitted an application in the fall semester, you can still apply for an NFIP award.  However, since the fall round of funding closed on the first day of spring semester classes, priority will be given to applicants whose students submitted eligible fellowship applications AFTER January 1, 2020. Once those applications have been processed, any remaining funds will be used to backfill applications associated with fellowships whose application deadlines occurred in fall 2019.

Finally, please encourage your graduate students to investigate this program. They may also be eligible for a small stipend for having submitted an external fellowship application.
