Engaging Social Media News Consumers in the Age of Incidental Exposure and Algorithms

    by Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch

Individuals are increasingly relying on social media and mobile apps for news and other information. However, much of this news exposure is incidental, when users are on these platforms for other purposes. While individuals still engage with the news that finds them on social media, there is mixed evidence about the knowledge they gain from this information, and how they judge its credibility. In this talk, I will present my own research on incidental social media news exposure and engagement, review related research being conducted in the field of Communication, and discuss implications for meaningful audience engagement in a media landscape defined by algorithms.

    Date: Friday, Jan 31

    Time: 12:00 - 1:00pm

    Room: WBY 001

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
    Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch
is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at University of Connecticut, where she is part of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab. She is also a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (inCHIP), the Connecticut Institute for Brain and Cognitive Science (IBACS), and the Sustainable Global Cities Initiative (SGCI).

Anne's research focuses on information sharing as communication on social media. Specifically, I investigate the effects of using social media to engage with news content, share health activities, disclose personal information, ask questions, seek social support, and how scientists can use these platforms to engage with the public.
