Seminar Title: “Can the Content of Water Conservation Nudges Influence the Persistence of Treatment Effects?”

Abstract: We investigate whether the content of nudges can influence the persistence of treatment effects using a large-scale field experiment of residential water customers in Reno, Nevada. The experiment included conventional social-comparison messages (SCM) that compare customers’ previous water use with that of a peer group, as well as a novel nudge focused on customers’ potential monetary savings from meeting a stated social norm. We find that the monetary savings-focused nudge leads to more persistent treatment effects than our conventional SCM treatments. Further, we find evidence that the observed differences in persistence across treatments are likely due, in part, to differences in customer investment in water-saving physical capital.
