  • CETL's Book Club

CETL is offering a new Book Club on David Gooblar’s The Missing Course:  Everything They Never Taught You about College Teaching.  David Gooblar is the author of The Chronicle of Higher Education’s popular “Pedagogy Unbound” column and will be visiting UConn on November 8.  He will be giving a talk, “The Case for Teaching”, at 2:00 in MCHU 206 and joining the Book Club (and other CETL guests) for lunch and discussion at 11:30.

    About The Missing Course

The Missing Course offers scholars at all levels a field guide to the state of the art in teaching and learning and is packed with invaluable insights to help students learn in any discipline.

Wary of the folk wisdom of the faculty lounge, David Gooblar builds his lessons on the newest findings and years of experience. From active-learning strategies to course design to getting students talking, The Missing Course walks you through the fundamentals of the student-centered classroom, one in which the measure of success is not how well you lecture but how much students learn. Along the way, readers will find ideas and tips they can use in their classrooms right away.

The Book Club will meet 3 times (including Gooblar’s visit), Oct. 18 (11:30 -- 1:00), Oct. 25 (11:30 -- 1:00), and Nov. 8 (11:30 -- 1:00).   We are asking people to commit to all 3 sessions.  CETL will provide lunch for all 3 meetings. All participants will receive a copy of the book prior to the first meeting.

Please consider joining us.  Also spread the word to your colleagues and graduate students.   Note that the “club” includes 3 delicious lunches and the book J.

If interested, people should register for both of the sessions using the links below.
