"Condensin-mediated regulation of chromosome structure and gene expression"
The talk will be about how an evolutionarily conserved protein complex called condensin gets recruited to and spreads on chromosomes, and regulates chromosomal interactions, chromatin and transcription using mostly C. elegans and S. cerevisiae as experimental systems.
Sevinc Ercan is an Associate Professor at the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at New York University. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Turkey, she moved to the US for her PhD and postdoctoral training, where she got interested in how DNA is packaged inside the cell nucleus and how this packaging contributes to regulation of genes. Ercan started her own research group in 2011, focusing on protein complexes that condense chromosomes to mediate their accurate segregation during cell division and to repress X chromosomes to balance gene expression between sexes. Ercan lab uses a small nematode worm as laboratory research model and applies a combination of experimental and computational approaches.
