But Who Will Lead? Redefining Leadership in Eras of Social and Political Upheaval

Across the political spectrum, traditional models of leadership are failing—or at least in flux.

An authoritarian president proclaims himself a populist hero, while the largest mass demonstrations in American history mobilize in protest. More women than ever are elected to Congress, while workplace sexual harassment and the gender pay gap persists. Young people speak up to challenge establishment leaders on the political left and right, as they feel the safety their parents’ generation enjoyed has slipped away, in terms of both the economy and going about their everyday lives untroubled by the threat of gun violence.

Historian Natalia Mehlman Petrzela draws on her research on another signal movement of political and social instability—the 1960s and 70s—to propose how such intense upheaval can transform attitudes about authority and reveal new sources of inspiration that can illuminate our current moment and even new paths forward.
