Human Resources and Benefits

  • New Employee Orientation

Currently, New Employee Orientation is a half-day event occurring on the Friday that starts each payroll period. With information provided from various offices across the University, Human Resources presents a vast amount of material in a short timeframe. The half-day timeframe, however, limits the amount of information that the University can share adequately and overwhelms new employees. While not mandatory, a significant majority of new employees attend orientation.

To improve the orientation experience for new employees and to ensure that the University thoroughly prepares employees for a successful career at UConn, Human Resources will implement several changes to New Employee Orientation in the coming months.

Beginning in early June, New Employee Orientation will be mandatory for all new employees hired on the regular payroll. Adjunct faculty will continue to receive orientation through an online module. In addition to requiring attendance, the Orientation program will take place over a day-and-a-half. Beginning with a half-day experience on Friday morning at Human Resources, employees will receive information on benefits and retirement, and they will have the opportunity to complete payroll forms and acquire their Husky One Card and parking permit. On Monday, during a full-day program on the main Storrs campus, new employees will receive information from University offices, including Human Resources, University Compliance, Institutional Equity, Public Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Diversity & Inclusion, Information Technology, and the University Ombuds.

While the new orientation format requires a greater time commitment from our new employees, we are confident that it will better welcome employees and introduce them to UConn.

Beginning in the fall, following the launch of PageUp, UConn’s new recruitment and onboarding system, new employees will receive preliminary information immediately after accepting an employment offer. This immediate onboarding will further enhance and expand the information that UConn can share with employees at New Employee Orientation.

Human Resources and its partners across the University are excited about the revamped New Employee Orientation program, and we look forward to its launch in early June.
