  • 4/6 UConn Choirs Presents Considering Matthew Shepard

On Saturday, April 6th at 8:00pm, the UConn Chamber Singers continue their collaboration with CONCORA, one of Connecticut's finest professional choirs, in presenting the powerful new oratorio, Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson. With Dr. Jamie Spillane conducting, and CONCORA director Dr. Christopher Shepard at the piano, these two ensembles have previously performed this work to great acclaim in Stamford and Hartford, CT and Worcester, MA. This modern day passion tells the story of the young gay man Matthew Shepard who was brutally killed twenty years ago in Laramie, Wyoming. The composer calls this choral work a "fusion oratorio" and it utilizes styles of music from an actual quote from Bach to chant, pop, and country music influences. This is a rare musical and dramatic event indeed and not to be missed.
